What are Ear Bonnets?
Over the last few years, the appearance of ear bonnets in training and competition has increased. Not only have they become an important tool in training for many, they have also become somewhat of a fashion statement being available in a huge range of colours and styles to suit any combination of tack.
Other than stylish looks, what are the benefits of using an ear bonnet?
- Improve concentration and focus – Depending on what type of bonnet you use, they can help reduce background noise to varying degrees, allowing your horse to be more focussed on in training or competition. It can help take away those outside distractions that may affect concentration.
- Noise reduction – With the reduction in noise, nervy or flighty horses can remain calmer. They are less likely to be startled or spooked by loud or sudden noises. During those windy days they can help reduce the hyperactivity some horses experience during those particular weather conditions.
- Protection – A bonnet can provide some protection for the ears and head. They can help sensitive horses that get annoyed by bugs especially in the warmer months. They can also reduce wind that may tickle the sensitive hair in the ear.
Types
- Crochet – Most common type, light weight, breathable and easy to use
- Light weight stretch fabric – provide a more snug fit, the stretch means they can fit varying ear sizes and they are easy to clean
- Fly fringe – come with longer tassels to help provide more protection from flies and bugs. Not used for competition.
- Noise reduction – Provide a more padded ear to help further reduce noise.
The use of ear bonnets is now commonplace especially in the disciplines of Dressage, Eventing and Jumping but it is best to check the rules and regulations of the relevant body before using them in competition. Every horse is different, so the effects of ear bonnets will vary greatly between horses. There is no guarantee that they will work for you, but they are certainly worth a try if you think your horse may benefit from using them. They may just help your horse stay focused and relaxed during training and competition allowing them to perform at their best.
