Ranvet Stakes
For many racing enthusiasts Autumn doesn’t just mean cool fresh mornings or leaves dropping from trees, for the racing industry it is one of the busiest times of the year and also the most exciting. Trainers and staff work long hours getting their stars ready for some of the most prestigious races in the world.
One of those races is the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes, to be held this year on the 18th March at Rosehill Gardens racecourse. For Sydney racing this on one of the biggest days on the racing calendar. Five group one races will be run on the day including the biggest 2-year-old race of the year, the Golden Slipper.
The history of the Ranvet Stakes goes all the way back to 1902 when the race was first run and won by a mare called Lady Grafton. Back then it was originally called the Rawson stakes, named after the Governor of NSW at the time Sir Harry Holdsworth Rawson. In 1991 the race was renamed the Ranvet Stakes and has remained unchanged since. Over the years the race has been run over varying distances and even once was staged at Canterbury racecourse but for most part it has remained at the 2000 metres.
