How can I treat Greasy Heel?
Wet weather can be great for our gardens and paddocks but can be a headache for many horse owners. If your horse is susceptible to greasy heel, you will be having nightmares as to what is to come. Many will try and prevent it before it happens and that is fantastic for those you may have access to stabling or dry yards but for many that isn’t an option.
There are many suggested quick fixes out there, or old remedies that many swear by, but you want to make sure you are doing the right thing for your horse and what you do is not going to make things worse. Treating greasy heel is tricky but it doesn’t have to be hard!
Here a few tips that may help!
- Clean the affected area well with a mild antiseptic or disinfectant wash to remove as much dirt and scabs as possible. If some scabs are a bit stubborn you may have to repeat this over a few days so as to not cause any unnecessary pain or inflammation. The scabs will soften and come off over the coming days.
- Dry the area well removing as much moisture as you can
- Apply Ranvet White Healer liberally to the affected area
- A bandage is not usually required, but depending on the environment your horse is in you can apply one to help keep the area clean and dry.
- Clean and reapply daily (you may find in more severe cases you need to do it twice a day) until the skin heals and the hair begins to grow back
- If the condition persists or gets worse, please contact your veterinarian, more intense treatment may be necessary.
White Healer is a wonderful multipurpose antiseptic cream for horses. It is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and safe to use on all skin types. You will find many uses for your tub of White Healer, not just greasy heel. It can help in the treatment of
- Greasy heel
- Rain scald

- Scratches and cuts
If you are concerned about any skin conditions your horse may present with, please do not hesitate to contact your vet for further diagnosis.
