Does my Horse Like Me?
The forever unanswered question, how can I tell if my horse loves me or even just likes me? They are simply not like dogs where you can easily tell if they like you by looking at them and see their tails wagging, horses don’t seem to develop feelings in quite the same way, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have an attachment to you.
Some of the signs that your horse may like you and not just because you are heading their way with a feed bucket are…
- Showing signs of affection such as nickering, breathing on you, nuzzling/licking or gently nibbling on your cloths
- They approach you when you come near them, resting their heads on you.
- Are relaxed when with you and seem to enjoy your presence.
- Easy to train, enjoy going for a ride or working with you.
- Will follow you around when you are moving through their yard or paddock.
- Prick their ears and look toward you when you approach.
- Enjoy grooming and being scratched.
It can be hard to tell, and it would seem horses don’t like or dislike, but they can show affection and develop bonds with those that care for them. They react to how you make them feel and generally that is safe, comfortable and well looked after. Ultimately, the relationship between a horse and a human is a testament to the power of empathy, patience, and care. It’s a beautiful reminder that love and connection can transcend species, creating bonds that enrich the lives of both the horse and the human.
